The annual Social Media Week Lagos 2016, kick off today at the prestigious Landmark Event Center, Victoria Island, Lagos. The event is biggest and largest tech conference, that gives experts opportunity in the digital era to share insight and tips on how individual and corporate brands can use social media to benefits their products or service.
As the event kick off today, on of the biggest programme of the day is that of ” The Future of Digital Publishing ” which was hosted by The Guardian Nigeria.
This session was moderated by Peace Hyde, CEO Aim Higher Consulting, with the ists being Teju Ajani, Head Content Partnerships, Youtube, Google; Adetomiwa Aladekomo,Nigerian Breweries, Senior Digital Manager; and Tolu Ogunlesi, Senior Special Adviser to the President on New Media.
However, the ists discussed various ways in which Nigerian’s could leverage technology and all the new social media platforms to help in business and personally.
They also spoke about the challenges facing the Nigerian new media industry, especially with the state of the micro-economy and the dwindling fortunes of the Naira.
How Does The Western Media Get Nigeria Wrong? invites journalists working in Lagos and from the larger online community to our debate on what we should be doing to bridge the gap.
- Should we commission more local stories tailored to a Nigerian audience? Or focus on promoting the international stories we know our Nigerian readers are interested in, like sport and news?
- What should our content look like? Should we focus on mobile devices, producing stories that load quickly in low-bandwidth environments?
- Perhaps we should take the Guardian’s reporting to Nigeria’s most popular social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter?
Or does distance ultimately prevent international media from covering Nigeria adequately? Maybe we should leave it to national news organisations to cover their own beat?
